History
Although written by Billy Roberts, Hendrix's version became definitive. Released as his first UK single in December 1966, it reached #6. The dark narrative about a man fleeing after killing his unfaithful wife was transformed by Hendrix's guitar work into something transcendent. His slow, blues-inflected interpretation differed dramatically from earlier versions.
